E+A星系的起源

E+A星系是指拥有强大Balmer吸收线且[OII]或H线中无显著发射的星系。强大的Balmer吸收线表明这些星系在最近1Gyr内经历了一次星际暴走。同时，这些星系因缺乏[OII]或H发射线而没有ongoing星形成的迹象。因此，E+A星系被解释为一种post-starburst星系——一种突然停止星际暴走的星系。然而，已有20多年，E+A现象的起源一直是谜。利用Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1中的100,000星系光谱，我们测试了解释E+A现象的三种流行解释。
