Antennae星系中年轻星团的质量函数

我们利用修复后的哈勃空间望远镜(HST)上安装的WFPC2拍摄的深场图像，确定了并合星系"Antennae"(NGC 4038/39)中年轻星团的质量函数。这是通过消光无关参数并与恒星族群合成轨迹进行比较，以估计每个星团的本征光度和年龄，进而得出其质量来完成的。我们发现，年轻星团（年龄≲160 Myr）的质量函数在10^4 < M < 10^6太阳质量范围内可以用幂律形式psi(M) ~ M^{-2}很好地描述。这一结果对我们理解星系早期演化阶段球状星团的起源可能具有重要启示。
