斯隆数字巡天(SDSS)因其光学成像与光谱学的非凡广度与雄心而具有革命性。我们认为,“亚毫米 SDSS”——一项在亚毫米波段灵敏的大面积成像+光谱巡天——将革命性地改变我们对早期宇宙星系演化的理解。通过探测至 z~10 星系的热尘埃连续谱发射以及原子和分子谱线发射,将有可能测量数十万高红移星系的红移、恒星形成率、尘埃与气体含量,下限至 ~L*。这些星系中的许多将在大型综合巡天望远镜的深光学成像中具有对应体。这一星系演化的三维图将跨越星系形成的高峰期直至宇宙黎明,测量恒星形成率密度与星系分子气体含量的共同演化,追踪金属的产生并描绘大尺度结构的增长。
