RS 变星 Ophiuchi 超软 X 射线光曲线 (2006 年)

类型 Ia 超级星云前任之一，循环 nova RS Ophiuchi 在 2006 年 2 月发生第六次记录性外涨，首次获得了完整的超软 X 射线光曲线。其显示出超软 X 射线阶段出现更早且持续时间更长的特征。当 RS Oph 外涨期间，氢燃烧区下方积聚了大量氦层时，这些特征便可自然解释，从而暗示该白矢星 (WD) 正在实际上增加质量。我们估算了 RS Oph 中 WD 的质量为 1.35 ± 0.01 M_sun，其质量增长率平均约为 1 × 10^{-7} M_sun yr^{-1}。若当前的质量吸积继续持续，预计 WD 将在数万至数十万年后后达到类型 Ia 爆炸的临界质量。
