摘要
TORCH 是一种飞行时间探测器,旨在为 10 m 飞行路径上动量达 10 GeV/c 的带电 π/K 粒子提供鉴别。为达到此性能水平,要求每个入射粒子的时间分辨为 15 ps。TORCH 使用 1 cm 厚石英平面作为切伦科夫光子源,光子随后被聚焦到有效面积 53 x 53 mm^2、等效分割为 8 x 128 像素的方形微通道板光电倍增管(MCP-PMT)上。一个带有定制 MCP-PMT 及相关读出电子学的小尺度 TORCH 演示器已在 CERN PS 设施的 5 GeV/c 混合 π/质子束中成功运行。初步结果表明可实现优于 100 ps 的单光子分辨。文中还讨论了用于 LHCb 实验 Upgrade II 的全尺寸 TORCH 探测器的预期性能。
