许多关于星系组装过程的线索都潜伏在星系的微弱外缘区域。这些部分的低面积亮度为对漫射光的研究带来了重大挑战，迄今为止，仅有少数对星系形成模型提供了稳健制约的研究成果。我们小组已开创性地使用极大范围的星系计数，以定量方式解决外部星系在极微弱光水平下的大尺度结构和星光内容的问题。我们在这里强调一些来自 M31 和 M33 影像和光谱调查的结果。
