IFC 是 buildingSMART 发布的建筑信息模型开放标准，相对于其有前景的潜力而言未被充分利用，因为根据从事 BIM 的从业者和研究者的经验，该标准在实现和使用中的问题阻碍了其有效应用。然而，从未对这些问题进行过系统性调查，因此缺乏解决问题的充分证据。GeoBIM 基准测试项目旨在通过吸纳外部志愿者，报告工具在相关方面（几何、语义、地理参考、功能）的行为来寻找此类证据，本文对其进行了分析与描述。有趣的是，关于不同软件对标准化数据的表现可检测到少量模式，并且在其对标准的支持中发现显著问题，这可能是由于标准数据模型极其复杂。本文与第二部分协同，后者描述了与 CityGML（地理信息中 IFC 的对应标准）相关的基准测试结果。
