耀变体中的偏振角摆动:以3C 279为例

在过去的几年中,已报道了若干次耀变体线偏振光学发射的电矢量位置角(EVPA)的大幅度连续旋转事件。这些事件常与高能伽马射线耀发相符,并引起了相当的关注,因为它们可能使人们探测喷流中伽马射线发射区的磁场结构。平谱射电类星体3C279是展现此行为的突出例子之一。我们的目标是研究观测到的EVPA旋转,并区分偏振变化性的随机与确定性起源。我们结合了3C279的R波段测光与光学偏振测量的多组数据,得到了覆盖2008-2012时段的采样极好的流量密度与偏振曲线。数据中识别出若干次大的EVPA旋转。我们引入了EVPA曲线平滑度的定量度量,并用以针对数据检验一组简单的随机游走偏振变化模型。3C279在光学低流量态与耀发态下展现出不同的偏振变化特征。耀发态期间的偏振变化,尤其是2011年中EVPA平滑的约360度旋转,与所检验的随机过程不一致。我们得出结论:在两种不同的光学流量态下,由两种不同的过程支配偏振变化,低亮度态可能为随机过程,而耀发活动期可能为确定性过程。
