在类星体被发现半个世纪后，对其研究仍然是天文学中最迷人的智力挑战之一。类星体是从相对论到磁流体动力学等各方面的实验室，也许是宇宙学中最好的可用探针。关于类星体我们已经学到了很多，但关于其物理性质的许多最基本问题仍然悬而未决。秒差距尺度观测在建立我们要当前对类星体的理解方面发挥了不可或缺的作用； virtually everything we know about quasars depends on such observations. 然而，秒差距尺度观测的最辉煌时刻可能才刚刚开始。这部分是由于高度可靠的甚长基线干涉测量 (VLBI) 网络的发展（这一过程仍在继续），但主要是由于多历元、同时、宽带观测的前所未有的可用性，这长期以来一直是类星体研究人员的“圣杯”。
