我简要回顾了天文观测台作为一个机构的历史。这包括：1) 伊斯兰的观测台；2) 中国和印度；3) 早期的欧洲观测台；4) 国家观测台的崛起；5) 私营（业余）观测台；6) 山顶观测台和现代时代。此外，也给出了对未在将要发表的百科全书版本中引用的材料的附加参考文献。
