欧洲脉冲星计时阵列数据释放 2 的噪声分析及其对引力波背景搜寻的启示

摘要

欧洲脉冲星计时阵列 (EPTA) 合作组近期发布了六颗脉冲星的扩展数据集 (DR2),并报告了存在共同红噪声信号的证据。在此我们给出这六颗脉冲星各自的噪声分析。我们考虑数类噪声:(i) 与射电频率无关、“非色散”且时间相关的红噪声;(ii) 色散量量与散射的变化;(iii) 系统与频段噪声;以及 (iv) 可能存在于 PTA 数据中的确定性信号(引力波除外)。我们进行贝叶斯模型选择,为每颗脉冲星寻找噪声成分的最优组合。利用这些定制模型,我们重新审视了先前 EPTA DR2 中报道的共同不相关红噪声信号,表明数据仍以高统计显著性支持该信号。接着,我们确认对于随机引力波背景所预期的 Hellings-Downs 空间相关性,数据既无偏好也不排斥。尽管每颗脉冲星的噪声模型发生了非常显著的变化,EPTA DR2 论文的主要结论仍保持不变。然而,噪声建模对于引力波的稳健探测至关重要,且在分析将包含更多脉冲星与更精密测量的下一版 EPTA 数据释放时,其影响可能十分显著。
