NASA 冷原子实验室:五年在轨量子科学运行

摘要

NASA 冷原子实验室(CAL)是一个在国际空间站微重力环境中研究量子气体的多用户科学设施。国际空间站持续的微重力环境使得以地面实验室无法达到的温度区间和无外力环境研究超冷原子成为可能,释放了观测新颖量子现象的潜力。CAL 于 2018 年 5 月发射至国际空间站,并自此作为世界上首个在轨多用户量子科学设施持续运行。CAL 是首个在轨利用超冷铷原子产生被称为玻色-爱因斯坦凝聚的第五态物质的实验设施,且近来可利用铷和钾的混合物产生。我们概述 CAL 的设计与运行,回顾迄今的科学贡献,并讨论近期为延长其有效任务寿命和增强科学能力的在轨升级。我们还基于五年多在轨运行的经验,考虑后续任务的机会。
