Multiplicative functions commutable with sums of squares

Abstract

Let kk be an integer greater than or equal 44. We show that if a multiplicative function ff satisfies f(x12+x22++xk2)=f(x1)2+f(x2)2++f(xk)2 f(x_1^2 + x_2^2 + \dots + x_k^2) = f(x_1)^2 + f(x_2)^2 + \dots + f(x_k)^2 for all positive integers xix_i's, then ff is the identity function.
