分子氧O2在历史上一直被认为是分子云中化学物种的丰富成分,因此是稠密星际介质的重要冷却剂。然而,从地面和太空进行的多次尝试都未能探测到O2发射。本文描述的工作使用空间外差光谱学来搜索星际介质中的分子氧。奥丁卫星携带一个1.1米亚毫米波天线和一个专用的119 GHz接收器,用于O2的基态谱线。从2002年开始,在多次观测期间,使用奥丁卫星对恒星形成分子云核ρ Oph A进行了34天的观测。我们在v(LSR) = 3.5 km/s处探测到一条谱线,其dv(FWHM) = 1.5 km/s,这些参数也与ρ Oph A相关的其他物种相同。该特征被识别为O2 (N_J = 1_1 - 1_0)跃迁,频率为118750.343 MHz。分子氧相对于H2的丰度在奥丁波束内平均为5E-8。该丰度一致低于先前报告的上限。
