磁场在宇宙中无处不在。在本综述中，我们集中于磁场的观测方面，涉及银河和外星系天体。读者可以追踪从最重要的磁场探测器手段——星光偏振、Zeeman 效应、外星系类星灯的旋转测量 (RMs) 、脉冲器 RM、射电偏振观测，以及新近实施的亚毫米和毫米偏振能力——获得的宇宙磁场观测里程碑。
