长型γ射线暴与核心坍缩超新星的环境不同

摘要

当巨型恒星耗尽其燃料后坍缩,常常会产生被称为核心坍缩超新星的惊人明亮的爆炸。偶尔,这种恒星坍缩也会驱动一种更加卓越的相对论性爆炸,称为持续时间较长的γ射线暴。人们本应期待的是,长型γ射线暴和核心坍缩超新星应当在相似的星系环境中发现。然而,我们在此表明这种期待是错误的。我们发现,长型γ射线暴远远更集中于其宿主星系最亮的区域,而核心坍缩超新星则不然。此外,长型γ射线暴的宿主星系显著暗淡且更不规则,而核心坍缩超新星的宿主星系则较亮且更规则。这些结果表明,长型γ射线暴与最质量较大的恒星相关,可能受限于化学演化有限的星系。我们的结果直接表明,长型γ射线暴在诸如我们自己的银河系这样的星系中相对较少。
