LOFAR(低频阵列)是一种新一代射电干涉仪,建造于荷兰北部并遍布欧洲。利用新颖的相控阵设计,LOFAR 覆盖了 largely unexplored 的 10-240 MHz 低频范围,并提供了一系列独特的观测能力。从位于荷兰东北部 Exloo 村附近的核心站向外延伸,共有 40 个 LOFAR 台站即将完工。另外五个台站已部署在德国,法国、瑞典和英国各建有一个台站。数字波束成形技术使 LOFAR 系统具有敏捷性,允许快速重新指向望远镜以及进行多次同时观测的潜力。凭借其密集的核心阵列和长干涉基线,LOFAR 在低频射电频段实现了无与伦比的灵敏度和角分辨率。LOFAR 设施由国际 LOFAR 望远镜 (ILT) 基金会联合运营,作为一个向全球天文界开放的天文台。LOFAR 是首批具备自动化处理流水线的射电天文台之一,可向其用户社区提供完全校准的科学产品。LOFAR 的新能力、技术和操作模式使其成为平方千米阵列 (SKA) 的重要探路者。我们概述了 LOFAR 仪器、其主要硬件和软件组件,以及驱动其设计的核心科学目标。此外,我们还展示了该新射电天文台调试阶段的一系列新结果。
