许多解释最高能宇宙射线来源的模型也预测显著的中子通量。这些模型的一个共同点是它们必须提供足够的能量来满足观测到的宇宙射线外银河成分的能量。假设相当数量的能量转化为高能中子，允许进行一种不依赖模型的中子信号估计。
