在终结宇宙“黑暗时代”的过程中，第一代恒星（即所谓的第三族星）的形成必定是最为重要的过程之一。我们总结了在限制其性质方面的最新进展，并讨论了第一批恒星可能质量相当大，甚至可能非常大（M > 100 M_sun）的基本物理原因。
