摘要
作为美国国家科学基金会资助的“多信使天文时代的Gemini”(GEMMA)计划的一部分,Gemini天文台正在开发GNAO,一台用于莫纳克亚Gemini北望远镜的宽视场自适应光学(AO)设施,该望远镜是北半球美国天文学家可用的唯一8米级开放获取望远镜。GNAO将为用户群体提供排队运行的Multi-Conjugate AO(MCAO)系统,赋能广泛的创新性太阳系、银河系与河外星系科学,尤其关注与时间域天文学中JWST的协同。GNAO工作建立在机构投资及更受限的块调度Gemini多共轭系统(GeMS)的经验之上,后者于2013年在Gemini南望远镜完成调试。项目通过新成立的Gemini AO工作组与GNAO科学团队以及外部仪器团队与社区紧密合作。GNAO的模块化设计将使其在与自适应副镜(ASM)结合时升级至地基层AO(GLAO)模式。通过将自然视宁度预期提升两倍,GLAO将极大改善Gemini北望远镜受限视宁度仪器的观测效率,并增强其多信使天文巡天能力。
