一项致力于研究系外行星大气层的专门任务代表了我们在探索宇宙中自身位置的重要里程碑,它将我们的太阳系置于更广阔的背景中,并探讨了行星适宜生命存在的条件。EChO(系外行星表征天文台)正是专门为此目的设计的任务概念。EChO将在一个稳定平台上提供同步、多波长光谱观测,从而允许进行极长时间的曝光。EChO将建立在Hubble、Spitzer及地面望远镜的观测基础之上,这些望远镜首次发现了系外行星大气中的分子和原子。EChO将同时观测足够宽的光谱区域——从可见光到中红外波段——以从单一光谱中约束大气温度结构及主要分子物种的丰度。其光谱范围和分辨率专为分离多达30种分子的谱带而定制,以反演行星大气的成分和温度结构。EChO的目标天体列表包括从平衡温度高达2000 K的木星大小行星,到 K的数倍地球质量的行星。我们已将覆盖0.4至16微米光谱范围、分为6个通道(1个可见光通道,5个红外通道)的色散光谱仪设计作为基线,该设计允许光谱分辨率根据目标亮度在数十至数百之间调整。该仪器将安装在1.5米级望远镜后,被动冷却至50 K,仪器结构与光学部件被动冷却至约45 K。EChO将被置于L2点周围的大幅halo轨道上。我们还进行了初步的成本与开发计划分析,发现EChO与ESA M级任务框架高度兼容。
