我们使用货天空间望远镜搭载 Goddard 高分辨率光谱仪 (GHRS) 的观测，报告在 Io 大气中检测到原子氯发射。Cl I 1349 A 偶极允许和 Cl I] 1386 A 禁跃迁多重线在信噪比分别为 6 和 10 的信号下被检测到，在 1994 年至1996年期间获取的综合 GHRS 光谱中。同时检测到氧和硫辐射，这些氯允许与其他大气物种的自洽丰度比。平均比值为：Cl/O = 0.017 +/- 0.008, Cl/S = 0.10 +/- 0.05, and S/O = 0.18 +/- 0.08。我们还推导出 Io 在 1335 A 处的几何反照率为 1.0 +/- 0.4 %，假设大气柱密度为 1x10^{16} cm^{-2}。
