Io上长期活跃火山活动的同位素证据

摘要

木星之卫Io因潮汐加热拥有广泛火山活动。其挥发性元素(包括硫和氯)的同位素组成反映了其大气排放与质量损失史,为探索其演化提供了途径。我们利用毫米波观测测量了Io大气中硫同位素,以及NaCl和KCl中的氯同位素。我们发现 34^{34}S/32^{32}S=0.0595±0.0038(δ34\delta^{34}S=+347±86‰),这在Solar System平均值中显著富集,表明Io已失去94%至99%的可用硫。我们测量 37^{37}Cl/35^{35}Cl=0.403±0.028(δ37\delta^{37}Cl=+263±88‰),氯的富集程度类似。这些测量结果表明,Io可能已持续数十亿年活跃火山活动,早期可能存在更高的大气排放与质量损失率。
