银河系新暗小卫星星系位于Canes Venatici

在本文中,我们宣布发现银河系的一颗新型暗小卫星星系,位于Canes Venatici星座中。它作为Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5)中星态浓度的发现。该卫星星系的色-光度图显示出一条清晰的红巨星分支(red giant branch),以及一条水平分支。根据其红巨星尖端(tip of the red giant branch),其距离约为220 kpc。基于SDSS数据,我们估计其绝对光度为M_v ~ -7.9,中心表面亮度为mu_0,V ~ 28 mag/arcsecond^2,半亮度半径为~ 8.5'(在测得的距离下约为550 pc)。Canes Venatici的外围区域呈现出延伸和扭曲的特征。发现如此微弱的星系靠近银河系强烈暗示还有更多此类天体尚未被发现。
