超大质量黑洞的质量几乎与其宿主bulge的速度分散(M_BH ~ sigma^alpha)相关，其中alpha =4.8 +/- 0.5。该关系比M_BH与bulge光度的关系更紧密，散布误差仅为测量误差预期的范围。由Magorrian等人（1998）估计的黑洞质量系统性地高于基于更精确质量估计定义的M_BH-sigma关系，部分黑洞高出两个数量级。M_BH-sigma关系的紧密性暗示了黑洞形成与星系bulge属性之间的强烈联系。
