ALMA 将能够探测星系中广泛的分子谱线。当前的孔径合成观测表明，即使在千秒差距（kpc）尺度上，星系的分子谱线发射也表现出显著的可变性。角秒级或更高分辨率的成像光谱学将通过定义和分类具有特定物理条件的区域，从而降低化学复杂性。
