Experimental results on diffraction, which were presented at the 7th International Workshop on Deep Inelastic Scattering and QCD (DIS99), are summarized.

I review some of the main results on hard diffraction, in their relation to QCD, and indicate some of the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments. I also make some suggestions for future work.
