摘要
外星体低表面亮度(LSB, mag/arcsec)宇宙是现代天文学中至关重要却鲜为人知的前沿领域。此微弱领域的秘密,关乎完整把握星系演化、层级组装乃至暗物质本质的理解。当前理论模型本质上不完整,主要反映最亮、最易观测天体的特性。为克服这一关键偏差并开启此领域的奥秘,亟需一项变革性的观测能力提升。30-40m 级望远镜,尤其是借助自适应光学实现的前所未有的灵敏度与空间分辨率,是探索这些微弱、低密度恒星星区的必备工具。本白皮书阐述了该设施( strategically 位于北半球以便准入关键近距离结构与丰富环境)能够实现的变革性 LSB 科学。
