人们普遍认为并写道，埃德温·哈勃引入术语“早型”和“晚型”是为了暗示星系的演化序列。这是不正确的。哈勃从恒星的谱分类中借用了这些术语，用以表示与外观复杂程度相关的序列，尽管是基于图像而非光谱。这些术语的时间含义在他1926年关于星系分类的论文之前就已经被摒弃了。
