通过电离冷却实现缪子束横向发射度降低

摘要

加速缪子束已被考虑用于下一代高能轻子-反轻子碰撞与中微子振荡研究。然而,高亮度缪子束尚未产生。缪子加速与存储的主要挑战源于束流占据的大相空间体积,该体积来自质子碰撞产生的介子衰变这一缪子产生机制。电离冷却是提议用于减小缪子束相空间体积的技术。在此,我们通过在缪子电离冷却实验(MICE)中观察到穿过氢化锂或液氢吸收体的束流横向发射度降低,展示了电离冷却的明确信号。该测量被实验模拟与理论模型很好地重现。此处展示的结果代表着向能在能量与强度前沿运行的基于缪子的设施实现迈出了实质性进展。
