三大丰富星系在 LMC 年龄间隙中被发现

在搜索 Hubble 太空望远镜档案库的过程中，我们偶然发现了三大丰富的 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) 星系团，其年龄位于 LMC `年龄间隙' 之中。这三个星系——NGC 2155、SL663 和 NGC 2121——具有 [Fe/H] ~ -1.0 和约 4 Gyr 的年龄。这将它们置于中间年龄的 LMC 星系（最旧者约为 2.5 Gyr）与 ESO121-SC03（年龄约为 9 Gyr）之间的年龄间隙。将这三个星系添加到 LMC 年龄-金属丰度关系后，显著减小了 LMC 星系年龄分布与野外星体之间存在的差异。进一步表明，寻找 LMC 中超过约 2.5 Gyr 的星系对于更好地理解其整体星系形成历史至关重要。
