构成星系核球的年老红恒星以及位于其中心的超大质量黑洞,是宇宙历史上一个时期的遗迹;在该时期,星系以惊人的速率形成恒星,而活动星系核 (AGN) 因黑洞吸积而发出明亮辐射。人们广泛推测但尚未证实的是,黑洞与恒星组分质量之间的紧密相关性源于 AGN 在其光度接近峰值时淬灭了周围的恒星形成。X 射线能明确追踪 AGN 的辐射,而强大的恒星形成星系通常被尘埃遮蔽,并在红外至亚毫米波段最亮。本文报道了亚毫米波和 X 射线观测结果,表明在宇宙年龄为 20-60 亿年时,AGN 宿主星系中快速恒星形成十分普遍,但在 X 射线光度高于 erg/s 的黑洞周围并未观测到最剧烈的恒星形成。这种强 AGN 宿主星系中的恒星形成抑制,是那些 AGN 驱动强大外流、排出宿主星系星际介质并在短暂宇宙时间内改变星系性质的模型的关键预测。
