M87 中星系球状星团亚群的相对年龄

通过利用 HST 上 WFPC2 获取的斯特罗姆根 photometry 数据，确定了 M87（NGC 4486）这座伽马型星系中星系球状星团（GC）亚群的相对年龄。我们采用多种星系合成模型，并假设两亚群在光度函数转换处的质量相同，从 observed magnitudes at the turnover of the globular cluster luminosity function 以及每个亚群的平均颜色中推导出差分年龄。我们测得两亚群之间年龄差为 0.2 +/- 1.5（系统误差） +/- 2（随机误差）Gyr，蓝色 GC 年龄较大。因此，在我们测量误差范围内，两亚群被认为是同步形成的。结合之前对 M87 星系球状星团的光谱年龄测定，我们的结果支持这些星系球状星团在高红移时形成，且在数十亿年内形成完毕。
