疏散星团 Stephenson 2 包含银河系中已知数量最多的红超巨星集合，目前也是银河系中已知质量第二大的年轻星团。我们获得了 Stephenson~2 及其周围环境中 30 多颗红超巨星在 CaII 三重线附近的多历元、中等分辨率光谱。我们发现，大多数光谱型为 M0-M2 的红超巨星 (RSGs) 与近红外 (NIR) 中最亮的成员之间存在明显的分离，后者具有极晚的光谱型并显示出强烈的大质量损失证据。光谱型的分布与其他星团（如 NGC 7419）或星协（如 Per OB1）中的 RSGs 相似。星团数据有力地支持了大质量损失和脉泽发射优先与晚 M 型光谱型相关联的观点，表明它们代表了一个演化阶段。
