恒星“原始质量函数”的主题历史几乎已达50年，始于1955年Salpeter发表的开创性论文。本综述讨论了过去十年来从对星系中已解析人口及年轻开放星团的研究中涌现出的更近期结果，即如今被称为初始质量函数（IMF）。
