由于其距离近且在晚型星系上富集，Virgo 星团是众多研究其环境对星系演化影响的热点，已被广泛研究。该星团近三十年来首次被 Davies 与 Lewis (1973) 发现，其中性氢 (HI) 缺乏现象如今已成为确立的观测现象，也在许多其他丰富星团中被观测到。对 Virgo 星团中中性氢 21 厘米线的诸多研究——从最外层的 lenticular 星系和最大的顺螺旋星系，到最微弱的矮星不规则星系——均表明，相当数量的天体相对于来自稀疏环境中光学属性相同的星系，已失去了显著比例的原子氢，呈现 HI 缺乏现象。
