重光子搜寻实验

摘要

重光子搜寻(HPS)实验旨在搜寻质量范围20 MeV/c2c^2至220 MeV/c2c^2、与标准模型光子动力学混合且耦合ϵ2>1010\epsilon^2 >10^{-10}的新矢量玻色子AA^\prime。除了探索难以用高能对撞机探测的轻质量弱耦合物理的普遍重要性外,此搜寻的主要动机在于亚GeV热遗迹构成暗物质的可能性,该情形需要一个新的相当轻的介质子,其中具有隐藏U(1)U(1)规范对称性、“暗”、“隐藏 sector”或“重”光子的模型尤其具吸引力。HPS利用其对照电荷的小耦合,通过类似于固定靶中轫致辐射的过程产生这些重光子,并在紧凑谱仪中探测其随后衰变至e+e\mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-对的可见特征。除了在巨大QED本底上搜寻e+e\mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-共振外,HPS能够精确测量衰变长度,从而对暗光子及其他长寿命新物理具有独特灵敏度。在2015和2016年于JLab CEBAF完成工程运行后,2019和2021年的物理运行已提供数据集,目前正在分析中以搜寻暗光子及其他新现象。
