最近发现的棕矮星WISE 0855为我们提供了首次直接研究太阳系外一个几乎与我们的气态巨行星一样冷的天体的机会。然而，表征棕矮星的传统方法——近红外光谱——目前不可行，因为WISE 0855太冷且暗淡。为了表征这个冰冻的系外世界，我们获取了4.5-5.2 m光谱，该波段长期用于研究木星深层热发射。我们的光谱揭示了大气水蒸气和云的存在，其吸收轮廓与木星惊人地相似。该光谱质量足够高，允许研究木星大气中早已被研究过的动力学和化学过程，但如今是在一个系外世界上。
