发现大麦哲伦云(LMC)的球状星团比银河系球状星团显著更椭,但在几乎所有其他方面非常相似。LMC球状星团的椭率被证明与其年龄或质量无关。提出椭率差异是由LMC和银河系中潮汐场强度不同造成的。强大的银河系潮汐场抹去了初始速度各向异性并从球状星团中移除角动量,使其变得更球形。LMC的潮汐场强度不足以完成这些任务,因此其球状星团保持接近其初始状态。
