我们展示了一项正在进行的、针对大样本ULIRG（超亮红外星系）的哈勃空间望远镜（HST）巡天结果。新的地面观测正被用于补充HST数据，并帮助解释这些复杂的天体。在ULIRG星族中发现了丰富的光谱、形态和动力学多样性，其中近100%是并合和/或碰撞遗迹。这种多样性的后果可能适用于解释遥远的亚毫米波/远红外源及其后续演化。
