定向闪烁晶体中电磁簇射发展的强烈增强及其对粒子探测器的启示

摘要

当粒子穿过与其某一晶轴对齐的晶体时,会经历一个在宏观距离上沿运动方向恒定的强电磁场。对于能量高于几个GeV的e±e^\pmγ\gamma射线,该场通过洛伦兹增强被放大,以至于超过施温格临界场E01.32×1016 V/cm\mathcal{E}_0 \sim 1.32 \times 10^{16}~\mathrm{V/cm}。在此区域,会发生非线性量子电动力学效应,例如强电磁辐射发射和正负电子对产生的增强,因此电磁簇射发展加速,有效簇射长度相比非晶材料缩短。我们研究了铅钨酸盐(PbWO4_4)中的这种现象,这是一种广泛用于粒子探测的高Z闪烁体。我们观察到,相对于主晶格轴的小入射角下闪烁光显著增加。使用120-GeV电子和5至100 GeV之间的γ\gamma射线进行的测量表明,定向样品中的能量沉积增加了多达三倍。这些发现挑战了当前晶体闪烁体中簇射发展的模型,并可能指导下一代加速器和空间探测器的开发。
