相互作用星系 M51 的恒星种群

摘要
基于哈勃太空望远镜的 ACS/WFC 图像，对相互作用星系系统 M51 (NGC5194/NGC5195) 中约一百万颗恒星进行了恒星光度测量。利用 TRGB 方法确定了该系统的距离，并测量了沿 NGC5194 半径方向的红超巨星的金属丰度。将主星系 NGC5194 中恒星的空间分布与我们对螺旋星系的经验模型进行比较，结果显示尽管 M51 系统中存在相互作用，两者仍具有相似性。研究发现，作为星系相互作用结果而产生的“羽毛”结构主要由中等年龄的恒星组成。
