SPHERE/ZIMPOL高分辨率偏振成像仪。I. 系统概述、PSF参数、日冕仪与偏振测量

我们描述了苏黎世成像偏振计(ZIMPOL),即SPHERE“VLT行星搜寻器”的可见光焦面子系统,它将当前AO系统的极限推向更短波长、更高空间分辨率以及大幅改善的偏振性能。我们为高对比度仪器的性能提供了新的基准,特别是偏振差分成像。我们分析了SPHERE/ZIMPOL的点扩散函数,并测量了不同波长、大气条件、恒星亮度和仪器模式下的峰值表面亮度、包围能量和半高全宽(FWHM)。对日冕仪图像进行了描述和分析,并将不同日冕仪的性能与对分离度92 mas、对比度6 mag的双星alpha Hyi的测试结果进行比较。对于偏振模式,我们使用零偏振和高偏振标准星进行仪器校准,并在此给出偏振数据绝对校准的方法。数据显示出微小但令人困扰的<1 mas的差分偏振光束偏移,可解释为来自倾斜镜面的Goos-Hänchen位移,我们讨论了如何校正这一效应。利用对共生Mira变星R Aqr周围尘埃散射的非日冕仪和深场日冕仪观测研究了偏振灵敏度。SPHERE/ZIMPOL在可见光波段实现了具有前所未有特性的成像性能,特别是极高的空间分辨率和极高的偏振对比度。该仪器为详细研究星周尘埃(以散射因而偏振的光)、暗弱伴星探测以及星周Halpha发射制图开辟了许多新的研究机遇。
