亚毫米波段或许是天空中大面积区域探索最不足的波段,尽管人们已在制作小区域深空图上付出了相当大的努力。因此,亚毫米天空的整体性质,以及其中稀有亮源的特性,在很大程度上仍属未知。本文描述了一项即将开展的巡天项目(SCUBA-2"全天"巡天,简称SASSy),旨在通过制作一幅大面积天图来解决这一问题——该天图覆盖JCMT可见天空约五分之一的面积(4800平方度),达到1 sigma噪声水平30 mJy/beam。这幅天图是一个更大巡天项目的先导,后者有望测绘JCMT可见的其余天空,其中ALMA也能观测到的区域为优先目标。SASSy已为4800平方度的先导阶段获得500小时观测时间,并将在SCUBA-2完成调试后启动,预计于2008年初开始。
