Retract rationality and algebraic tori

Abstract

For any prime number pp and field kk, we characterize the pp-retract rationality of an algebraic kk-torus in terms of its character lattice. We show that a kk-torus is retract rational if and only if it is pp-retract rational for every prime pp, and that the Noether problem for retract rationality for a group of multiplicative type GG has an affirmative answer for GG if and only if the Noether problem for pp-retract rationality for GG have a positive answer for all pp. For every finite set of primes SS we give examples of tori that are pp-retract rational if and only if pSp\notin S.
