伽马射线揭示的热核新星爆发中的质子加速

摘要

经典新星是灾变双星系统,其中伴星的物质被吸积到白矮(WD)上。氢在表层中的累积最终引发 WD 表面的热核爆炸,使 WD 增亮至约 10^5 太阳光度并触发累积物质的抛射。它们提供了将粒子(电子或质子)加速到高能所需的极端条件。本文报道 MAGIC 望远镜对 RS Ophiuchi(RS Oph)2021 年爆发的伽马射线探测,RS Oph 是一颗拥有红巨星(RG)伴星的再发新星,这使我们首次能够精确刻画新星在 60 GeV 至 250 GeV 能量范围内的辐射。对 Fermi-LAT 与 MAGIC 联合数据的理论解释表明,质子在新星激波中被加速至数百 GeV。此类质子应在再发新星周围产生增强宇宙线密度的气泡,尺度约为 10 pc。
