本文综述了潜在的引力波源，如中子星、黑洞和双星系统的特性，以及对引力波背景的不同贡献（随机和连续）。也考虑了这些源由当代激光束干涉仪检测的可能性，这些干涉仪将在2002年左右完全运行。
