紫外和 21 厘米观测表明，极低金属丰度星系 I Zw 18 是一个由星流供能的星系，其中包含一个负责产生在 I Zw18-NW 中观测到的星云 He II 复合辐射的原始恒星“口袋”。哈勃望远镜/COS 和远紫外光谱探索者 (FUSE) 的远紫外光谱通过证明 I Zw 18-NW 的光谱未显示出与 He II 复合辐射具有可比电离度的 O VI 1032, 1038 等金属线，从而使这一建议成为定论。
