我们报告对中间年龄开放星系 NGC 3960 的 CCD UBVI 光度测量和高分辨率光谱观测。从光度数据导出的颜色-光度图 (CMD) 借助合成 CMD 方法解释后，允许我们估算星系参数。我们推导出：年龄为 0.9 或 0.6 Gyr（取决于是否包括对对流层区域的越过），距离 (m-M)0 = 11.6 +/- 0.1， reddening E(B-V) = 0.29 +/- 0.02，差分 reddening Delta E(B-V) = 0.05 以及大约为日金属浓度与半日金属浓度之间的值。我们对三颗丘度星获得了高分辨率光谱，推导出平均 [Fe/H] = -0.12（rms 0.04 dex），与光度测量结果非常一致。我们还获得了 α 元素、Fe 峰元素以及 Ba 的丰度。从光谱温度和 Alonso 等人的校准推导的对 individual 星的 reddenings 进一步支持了该星系存在显著的星际 reddening 差异。
