低温大口径强度映射实验(EXCLAIM)是一台气球载远红外望远镜,将对宇宙时间尺度上的恒星形成历史进行巡天,以增进我们对为何在红移 z < 2 时恒星形成率下降、尽管暗物质持续成团的理解。具体而言,EXCLAIM 将在一红移区间 0 < z < 3.5 的窗口内绘制红移一氧化碳与单次电离碳谱线的发射图,遵循一种称为强度映射的创新方法。强度映射测量累积谱线发射亮度涨落的统计量,而非探测单个星系,从而实现对该发射气体的盲、完备普查。为明确探测此发射,EXCLAIM 将与一个光谱星系星表进行交叉相关。该任务采用低温设计,将望远镜光学系统冷却至约 1.7 K。望远镜配备 90 cm 主镜,以探测天空中从线性区到散粒噪声主导尺度的空间尺度。望远镜光学元件耦合至六个 {\mu}-Spec 光谱仪模块,工作于 420–540 GHz 频段,光谱分辨率 512,并采用微波动力学电感探测器。基线设计中由射频系统级芯片(RFSoC)读出探测器。低温望远镜与灵敏探测器使 EXCLAIM 能在上层大气低发射的光谱窗口达到高灵敏度。本文给出自 2019 年初 EXCLAIM 项目启动以来任务设计与研制状态的概述。
